The Board Certification Program was created out of The Florida Supreme Court's mandate to the Florida Bar to offer a "Board Certification" program for Florida Bar members. The purpose of the Board Certification program was to assist the public in making an informed decision when seeking and selecting a lawyer. Importantly, only board certified attorneys are allowed to identify themselves as "Florida Bar Board Certified" or as a "Specialist" in a particular legal field.
To become Board Certified in Criminal Trial Law, a lawyer must have practiced on a full-time basis for at least five years, must have handled at least 25 criminal trials, must pass peer review of judges and lawyers whom the lawyer has litigated with, must have completed 45 hours of continuing legal education, and, most importantly, pass a written examination demonstrating knowledge, skill, and proficiency in the field of criminal trial law.
